Garden 10 in San Pedro

Design: Rick Fisher, Toyon Design
Total Garden Size: Three-acre demonstration garden; part of 102-acre site
Year Started: 2009
Notable Features: The demonstration garden around the Nature Center emphasizes the Tongva culture’s connection to native plant species. Plantings in directional orientation symbolize the stages of life and seasonal cycles. Walk the recommended route: east, south, west, north. A sun dial adjacent to the nature center shows the seasonal solstice and equinox calendar set in stones on the ground, and a bioswale captures rainwater. Formerly a WWII military bunker, concrete from that period has been repurposed as seating for visitors.
