Design: Homeowner
Maintenance: Homeowner
Garden Size: 4,000 square feet front and back
Started: 2016
Notable Features: Visitors to this Los Angeles River-adjacent garden are greeted by white sage in the parkway and a large stand of Matillija poppy in the front yard. Mature western sycamore, blue elderberry, and cottonwood trees along the greenway supply shade for the 1926 Spanish bungalow. Experiments in sustainable living abound here: native plants merge with non-native fruit trees, and chickens roam the site. Species such as salt heliotrope, California goldenrod, desert wild grape, and yerba buena were selected for their tolerance to greywater.
