Design: Homeowner
Maintenance: Homeowner
Garden Size: 12,000 square feet front and back
Started: 2008
Notable Features: The owners of this fully restored 1910 Craftsman home dub their aesthetic “California Apocalyptica: where the native plants emerge from the ruins of society.” A vast collection of California bulbs, unusual and showy annuals and perennials, vines, and a running creek with aquatic plants and amphibians, emerge from repurposed construction rubble and found materials. A formal hedge of Catalina cherry screens a pool flanked by aromatic sages and sun-loving poppies. This gardeners’ garden has inspired a neighborhood trend for native landscapes.
